Boys varsity basketball senior night against Colonial
|
To document the boy's varsity basketball senior night match, I filmed and edited a video covering the game. I interviewed the coach before the game and the players after the game. This benefited the storyline of the video because it gave the package a clear beginning and end. To capture all of the details of the night, voice-overs became a necessary component. The voice-overs linked the content together, filling in the middle of the video. I posted this video on our staff Instagram account as an IGTV video. It is also posted on our YouTube channel.

Day in the life of student athlete Bailey Daniel
|
Bailey Daniel, a senior at Boone, underwent a rigorous academic and athletic schedule daily. I decided to tell her story through a video package. I filmed her throughout her day and used a video with permission from her dad, Bill Daniel, since I could not attend the practice due to coronavirus regulations. I recorded the voice-over at the beginning of the video. Through interviewing Bailey, I obtained the audio clips discussing her schedule and used them to overlay the footage.

Aspiring veterinarian volunteers to gain experience
|
I documented aspiring veterinarian, Bennett Grabowski, volunteering at Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando. Since this video featured the subject more directly compared to the student athlete video above, I decided to keep more of Bennett's interview visible, instead of just using the audio as a voice-over. I strategically included clips of Bennett's volunteer work at the moments he discussed them, taking the viewer into his reality. I recorded voice-overs to open and close the video. This video challenged me with obtaining quality footage in a short amount of time. I only had one opportunity to visit the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, so I had to make sure I recorded usable footage.

Orlando Has Heart
|
I produced this video alongside my friend Sami to honor the Pulse Nightclub Shooting in Orlando, Florida. We filmed, edited, wrote and created the video and entered it into the Orange County Jim Harbin Media Festival and won third place. It felt incredible to learn about broadcast journalism and served as my first real exposure to visual storytelling and journalism outside of the classroom. Creating this video in eighth grade catapulted my interest in journalism to where it is today.

interviewing and planning
To plan videos, I wrote out interview questions like I normally would when approaching a story. I interviewed the subjects of my videos with the questions and shot b-roll footage to overlay the interviews. While recording b-roll, I took notes in my phone to refer to while editing the video or wrote down questions I wanted to ask the subject. After filming, I wrote out simple scripts that displayed the sequence of events in the video as a plan to follow. I also wrote out what I planned to say in my voice-overs and read them aloud to record them.
