public relations
I volunteered with Harvard's Coronavirus Visualization Team throughout the summer in 2020. CVT is a network of high school and college students around the globe battling the "infodemic," brought by the pandemic, by creating accessible data visualizations for news sources and communities to use.
Working with their public relations team, I wrote a press release in collaboration with another high school student, Ellie Klibaner-Schiff. Our goal: to write a press release communicating the data visualized in the two graphs below comparing unemployment to pollution in four cities in California. As my first time writing a press release, I gained knowledge about why they are necessary and how to construct an effective one. We communicated the graphs' findings to news sources and organizations looking for editorial use. To write this together, Ellie and I set up a Zoom call via Slack, an app all of CVT used to communicate with one another. We shared a Google Doc through our e-mail and worked together effectively and simultaneously while in different states and time zones. The press release went through an editing process, reviewed by the head of the public relations team and the head of the data visualization team to ensure quality and overall effectiveness.
